Report date: 12.28.23

Alaska Safe Riders here with your weekly Backcountry Trail report thanks to support from the Matanuska-Susitna Borough and this station.

In true Alaskan style, this rollercoaster weather is expected to continue with warmer temperatures and more snow forecast this weekend.

Conditions are reported windswept and crusted in Hatcher Pass and Turnagain. There’s powder riding with groomed trails north on the Parks toward Willow and Petersville. And you’ll find more than four feet of snow with some overflow north on the Glenn Highway toward Eureka.

The groomers deserve a big thank you for keeping the trails open. Give them a wave if you see them out there. And don’t forget to check the weather and avalanche forecast before you head for the hills at alaska_snow_dot_org.

Solo travel on a snowmachine is not advised. But we all know, sometimes you don’t have another option. In those cases, carry extra gear to get unstuck and travel more conservatively.  Having a good shovel, ropes and pulleys to set a mechanical advantage system can be essential.  Learn how to set up these systems and build an anchor to get yourself unstuck at Alaska_Safe_Riders_dot_org.

That’s it for this week. And for the year. Hope your New Year’s celebrations are filled with laughter, fun and great adventures. Tune in next year for more tips, tricks and training opportunities!
