Weekly report 3.21.2024

00:00

Alaska Safe Riders here with your weekly Backcountry Trail report thanks to support from the Matanuska-Susitna Borough and this station.

Melting, melting, melting. With temperatures sticking above 32 degrees, snow is disappearing fast. You can still find some great riding opportunities if you head north toward Denali on the Parks or toward Lake Louise on the Glenn. Temperatures are cooler in these areas, keeping the snowpack firm for riding and touring. All the grooming throughout the season has paid off, keeping trails good for riding.

Morning rides continue to offer your best chances for firm snow. Overflow and weak ice are an ever increasing hazard so be alert near all waterways.

Avalanche concerns continue to moderate but ‘low’ does not mean ‘no’. Keep your head up and be on the lookout for wind slabs and sliding roofs. Watch for warming in the afternoon, especially on south facing slopes or if the sun pops out. You can find the latest forecasts and observations for the area you plan to travel at alaskasnow.org.

Thinking of exploring a glacier? You may have heard about a friend’s adventure and want to try it yourself. A guide and some basic training can help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. The Anchorage Snowmobile Club is hosting a free workshop at the I.B.E.W hall in Anchorage on Tuesday, April 2nd.

Get all the details, sign up for the workshop, or request a free presentation for your school or group at Alaska_Safe_Riders_dot_org.

That’s it for this week. Get out and enjoy the spring snow while it lasts! Keep alert and stay safe!
