Weekly report 3.13.2025

00:00

Alaska Safe Riders here with your weekly snow and trail report thanks to support from the M.E.A Charitable Foundation and this station.

Spring conditions are in full swing. With temperatures hovering in the thirties and forties during the day, expect melting snow and weak ice to be prevalent throughout the region.

Riders are still reporting good trails north on the Glenn around Eureka and Gunsight with more than four feet of snow. Further north to Summit and Thompson Pass, conditions are also reported to offer some pretty epic riding.

Trails near Petersville are icy with about four inches of old snow. A group of riders recently broke through the Susitna River with tragic consequences. Be alert for open water and thin ice near or on all waterways.

You’ll still find great riding around Turnagain Pass but be alert as avalanche danger throughout the region remains high. There have been multiple reports of recent avalanche tragedies and close calls. Any time you travel in or near the mountains, go with a partner and carry a beacon, shovel, and probe and know how to use them. Get current snow and avalanche conditions at Alaska_Snow-dot-org.

If you plan to ride on or near glaciers, you’ll need special skills and tools. A group of riders who attended a safe rider workshop successfully executed a rescue when a rider from another group fell in a crevasse. Don’t become a victim!  Visit Alaska_Safe_Riders-dot-o-r-g to find lots of tips, tricks and tools to make your adventure a safe one.

Don’t forget the Hatcher Pass Boulder Dash and Valdez Mayor’s Cup competitions are both open for online registration. Sign up today and get ready to race!

Keep it safe out there, and tune in next week for more updates and tips!
