Alaska Safe Riders is back with another weekly snow and trail
report — proudly supported by the Mat-Su Health Foundation and 95.5 The Pass with special guest audio from Team CC Skidoo Ambassador, Scott Franz.
As we head into the new year, Alaska Safe Riders has a strong lineup of events focused on building skills, confidence, and community. January brings Mountain Rider Skills clinics in Turnagain on January 10th and Summit on January 24th, along with Teen Mountain Rider Skills sessions on January 11th in Turnagain and January 25th in Summit. At the end of the month, riders can look forward to the emPOWDERed Backcountry Ladies Ride in Eureka and AK Powder Pursuit in Thompson Pass, both running January 31st through February 1st. We’re also working on adding more events, so becoming a member is the best way to stay connected and informed.
Snow coverage remains very limited across much of Southcentral, with no established base layer. The biggest risks this weekend are exposed ground hazards, thin snow, icy patches, and unpredictable conditions. There are no ready riding zones at lower elevations, and even higher terrain holds inconsistent coverage shaped by wind. If you do head out, slow speeds, conservative choices, and realistic expectations are essential.
With colder temperatures ahead, this is a good time to test your cold-weather gear close to home and see how well your current setup keeps you warm. While riding opportunities are limited right now, we encourage riders to use this time to go through their gear bags and take inventory of the tools, layers, and safety equipment they carry. Alaska Safe Riders offers resources and checklists on our website to help guide a well-prepared pack and support safer days on the trail.
