Weekly report 3.21.2024
Alaska Safe Riders here with your weekly Backcountry Trail report thanks to support from the Matanuska-Susitna Borough and this station.
Spring continues to make an impact across Alaska this week. Get out and ride, tour, or explore while you still have the opportunity. Snow conditions are soft on top with buried weak layers lurking under the surface. With highs in the 40’s and lows in the 20’s, spring thaw will continue to change conditions rapidly.
Avalanche danger across the region has moderated however there is still a significant chance to trigger a large slide. Make sure you get the latest observations and forecasts for the area you plan to travel at alaskasnow.org.
Don’t forget this Saturday, March 23rd is avalanche awareness day in Turnagain Pass. Stop by the motorized parking lot to get in on all the free action.
Motorized areas in Hatcher Pass and on the Kenai around Lost Lake, Primrose and more are open to snowmachines, but it is important to remember you will need a State of Alaska parking permit as well as a registered snowtrack decal for your machine to recreate in these areas. Visit the Alaska State Parks website for all the current information.
It’s not too late to get in on some great training. Request a free class for your school or group at Alaska_Safe_Riders_dot_org.
That’s it for this week. Get out and enjoy the spring sun and great snow conditions while you can! Keep alert and stay safe!
