Class Size: Max 10 riders – The clinic is led by two qualified instructors so the course is a 5 to 1 ratio.
Cost: $400 per person
Take your backcountry riding to the next level with this intensive, two-day, hands-on field course designed for winter mountain riders ready to move beyond the basics. This course focuses on real-world avalanche safety, terrain management, and decision-making in complex winter environments.
Over two immersive days in the mountains, participants will gain practical experience and critical skills through hands-on instruction and realistic scenarios, including:
Avalanche Rescue
Execute fast, effective companion rescues using current best practices and proven techniques.
Snowpack & Hazard Evaluation
Learn how to assess snowpack structure, stability, and identify red flags in variable alpine conditions.
Terrain Selection & Mountain Travel
Develop strategies for safe route-finding, managing exposure, and traveling efficiently in avalanche terrain.
Group Management & Human Factors
Practice communication, leadership, and decision-making strategies to reduce common human-factor pitfalls.
Avalanche Safety Equipment Use
Build confidence and proficiency with your beacon, probe, shovel, and emergency response systems.
This course is physically and mentally engaging and is designed to challenge riders while building confidence, competence, and preparedness for safer backcountry travel.
Participant Requirements
- Riders must commit to attending both days of the course. Partial attendance is not permitted.
- Class size is limited to 10 riders to ensure high-quality instruction and hands-on learning.
- Riders must bring their own snowmachine and provide their own transportation to and from the riding area.
- Participants are required to have and carry standard avalanche safety equipment, including: Avalanche transceiver (beacon), Probe, Shovel.
- Avalanche airbag packs are strongly recommended but not required.
- Radios are strongly recommended but not required.
- Riders must bring lunch, snacks, and adequate hydration for full days in the field.
- An active Alaska Safe Riders membership is required to participate.
