Trail Report for 01.22.2026

00:00

Alaska Safe Riders here with your weekly snow and trail report thanks to the Mat-Su Health Foundation.

The roller coaster of winter continues. This week expect mild, clear weather to prevail with the next chance of snow forecast for early next week.

If you’re heading north on the Glenn Highway, trail conditions around Eureka and Gunsight are reported in good condition. Get off trail and you’ll likely find a few inches of glazed crust with a soft, sugary base underneath.

Overflow and open water continue to plague the region so use caution with route selection when riding on or near rivers and lakes.

In Turnagain, the Chugach National Forest Avalanche Center is still reporting unusually dangerous conditions persisting despite the clear weather. If you’re traveling in avalanche terrain, make sure to get the forecast, exercise caution, carry the proper safety gear, and travel with a prepared partner.

Alaska Safe Riders continues to offer multiple training opportunities for all ages and abilities. There will be a Mountain Riders Skills Clinic at Summit Lake January 24th and 25th, AK Powder Pursuit Women’s Clinic January 31st through February 1st, and Avalanche and Backcountry Safety 2-Day Field Course February 7th and 8th in Thompson Pass. Find a full list of upcoming events or request a program for your school or group at Alaska_Safe_Riders_dot_org.

That’s it for this week. Remember to ride smart, stay informed, and make decisions that ensure everyone makes it home. We’ll be back next week with more updates and tips.
