Alaska Safe Riders here with your weekly Backcountry Trail report thanks to support from the Matanuska-Susitna Borough and this station.

Crazy weather continues to bring challenges. Spring-like temperatures have made getting out to explore a more comfortable endeavor but is also playing havoc on snow conditions.

Iron Dog racers have run into blizzard winds, open water, mushy snowpack and solid ice shelves so be aware and watch for overflow and dangerous ice conditions near inlets, outlets and on rivers.

Cooler temperatures and new snow are in the forecast so watch for lots of great opportunities to get out and enjoy the beauty of Alaska as spring begins to arrive.

Mountain travel is currently not recommended due to high avalanche potential. The latest warm, wet and windy storms have increased the danger for both natural and human triggered slides. Conditions change rapidly so make sure to check out the latest forecasts and observations for the area you plan to travel at Alaska_Snow_dot_org.

The Alaska Safe Riders team continues visiting schools and communities across Alaska. It’s not too late to get your school or group signed up for a presentation at Alaska_Safe_Riders_dot_org.

That’s it for this week. Stay safe and tune in next week for more updates and tips!
