Weekly report 2.29.2024

00:00

Alaska Safe Riders here with your weekly Backcountry Trail report thanks to support from the Matanuska-Susitna Borough and this station.

Looks like good riding weather returns this weekend with high’s in the teens, lows near zero, and calm winds in the forecast. Bundle up for comfort and safety, and expect more daylight, good snow off trails, and extensive grooming on the trails.

Continue to stay alert for overflow when traveling on rivers, lakes, and streams. If you’re planning to head for the mountains, steer clear of wind slabs and overhanging cornices. Don’t forget to check the latest forecasts and observations for the area you plan to travel at Alaska_Snow_dot_org.

Congratulations to Iron Dog team 39, Cody Barber and Brett Lampan, for their big win. And to Quebec’s Anny Malo for winning the 2024 Fur Rondy Open World Championship Sled Dog race. With the Iron Dog and Fur Rondy now in the books, it’s Iditarod Race time this weekend with the official start taking off from Willow Lake on Sunday.

This season, Alaska Safe Riders instructors have visited more than 20 communities across Alaska, reaching more than 3,500 individuals. Don’t let your school or group miss out. Sign up for a presentation today at Alaska_Safe_Riders_dot_org.

That’s it for this week. Keep it safe out there and tune in next week for more updates and tips!
