Weekly report 3.7.2024

00:00

Alaska Safe Riders here with your weekly Backcountry Trail report thanks to support from the Matanuska-Susitna Borough and this station.

After getting hammered by winds this past week, many trails were left in rough shape. But hold on… With temperatures in the 20’s, a dusting of new snow, and more in the forecast, riding should continue to improve.

Areas north from Big Lake to Denali National Park are in good condition with lots of freshly groomed trails. Make sure to watch for overflow, especially off trail and around inlets and outlets of waterways. Heading north on the Glenn Highway toward Eureka and Lake Louise, you’ll find groomed trails with less wind impact.

If you head for the mountains, be alert for windloaded slopes especially around Turnagain Arm. Conditions can change rapidly so remember to check the latest forecasts and observations for the areas you plan to travel at Alaska_Snow_dot_org.

Alaska Safe Riders received news this week that a student who had recently won a new helmet at one of our training events was involved in a bad wreck. First responders credit the now mangled helmet for saving the young rider’s life. Be smart, wear the proper safety gear when you ride.

The Alaska Department of Public Safety still has free training presentations available for schools. Don’t miss out. Sign your class or school up today at Alaska_Safe_Riders_dot_org.

That’s it for this week. Keep it safe out there and tune in next week for more updates and tips!
