Trail Report for 03/12/2026
Alaska Safe Riders here with your weekly snow and trail report — proudly supported by the Mat-Su Health Foundation.
Across many of Alaska’s riding zones – including Hatcher Pass, the Talkeetna Mountains, Eureka, Petersville, Cantwell, Turnagain Pass, and the Seward area -riders should expect variable conditions this weekend with layered snowpacks and wind-affected terrain. .
In the Willow trail system, riders report a few inches of fresh snow helping keep machines cool, but swamps remain deceptive with layered crust that makes carving difficult. Along the Deshka to Skwentna trail, riders report three to four feet of fresh snow in the swamps with a solid base and minimal wind impact.
The Lake Louise Snowmachine Club reports incoming snowfall and cold temperatures. Crews recently groomed the Tolsona, Cindy, and Crosswinds trails along with trails across Lake Louise, Susitna, and Tyone.
Interior riders near Nenana are seeing nearly three feet of fresh snow, although overflow in low areas remains a concern.
In Turnagain Pass and the Seward zone, riders report around 10 inches of new snow sitting over a crust layer which may cause skis to punch through inconsistently. The Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center, currently lists avalanche danger around Turnagain Pass as LOW at all elevations, but wind loading and changing weather can increase risk quickly. Always check Alaska-Snow-dot-org for the latest avalanche observations and regional forecasts before heading into the backcountry. Key hazards this weekend include wind slabs in alpine terrain, crust layers affecting handling, rough trail sections, and overflow in low areas.
