Trail Report for 04/16/2026

00:00

Alaska Safe Riders here with your weekly snow and trail report — proudly supported by the Mat-Su Health Foundation.

With warming temperatures, the 40th annual Arctic Man now in the books, and the Mountain Man Hill Climb happening this weekend in Thompson Pass, it’s time to bring this season’s winter trail report to a close.

The recent rain and snow mix have added weight to an already weak snow pack raising avalanche concerns across the region. Avoid steep terrain, especially on south facing slopes, and use caution on wind-loaded aspects if you see any signs of instability. Always check available resources for the area you plan to ride at Alaska_Snow_dot_org before heading for the mountains.

Riders report that trails in the Petersville, Cantwell area are holding up thanks to the grooming crews’ great work this season. New snow is also keeping trails north around Sheep Mountain, Gunsight, and Lake Louise in good condition.

With mixed rain and snow in the forecast, and temperatures hovering in the low 40’s during the day and just below freezing at night, conditions should remain good for riding and touring this weekend. Be sure to watch for overflow and stay alert near all inlets and outlets of rivers, lakes and streams.

Thompson Pass, near Valdez is the place to be this weekend for the 35th annual Mountain Man Hill Climb. If you love the thrill of snowmachines, fast racing, and opportunities to train with some of the very best, come claim your spot near mile 28 of the Richardson Highway.

Alaska Safe Riders will be on hand to provide training, safety information, swag, and great stories. Learn more at Alaska_Safe_Riders_dot_org
