SAFETY TIP CAMPAIGN FUNDED
Sometimes just a little reminder is enough to save a life. Maybe you didn’t know, or maybe you’ve heard the message before but just hadn’t thought about it recently. Like… did you know new snow adds weight to the snowpack and should be avoided until it has time to settle and bond? Or that wind transports snow faster than it falls from the sky and can build hazardous cornices or dangerously over load slopes? Or that overflow can be a sign of weak ice and should be crossed carefully?
Getting safety tips like these out to the general public is the goal behind the Alaska Safe Riders Safety Tip Campaign, recently awarded a $5,000 grant by the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.
Funds are being used to produce and distribute a weekly trail report that includes safety tips to radio stations broadcasting in the Mat-Su Borough. Current stations: KNLT FM – 95.5 The Pass, Big Cabbage Public Radio KVRF (89.5), KVRK (88.3), and KGVC (91.5), Ohana Media stations KMBQ 99.7, The Moose 96.3 and Bob FM 92.1.
The purpose of this project is to raise awareness about back-country riding and safe off-road vehicle operation. Alaskans and visitors of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to safely enjoy outdoor recreation and travel by getting properly prepared, trained and equipped.
By raising awareness through educational programs related to all off-highway vehicles, like those provided by Alaska Safe Riders, we can work together toward ending preventable injuries and deaths related to the operation of these vehicles in Alaska.
